Foreign Media Hail China's Progress on Occasion of Party Congress

A number of foreign media issued reports on the occasion of the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), hailing the progress China has made since it adopted the reform and opening up policy, especially in the past five years.

Vietnamese party daily Nhan Dan (People) reported that under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as general secretary in building socialism with Chinese characteristics, China has enhanced its economic strength, significantly improved the livelihood of its people, and made new progress in promoting democracy and the rule of law in the past five years.

Vietnam Economic Times commented that while China maintains continuous high-speed economic growth, the coordinated development between various regions as well as between the urban and rural areas has been greatly strengthened, and revenues and enterprise profits have continued to increase by a big margin.

Economic figures have shown that the Chinese economy has landed on the track of sound and fast development, the paper said.

The People's Army daily of Vietnam said in an article that the CPC's 17th National Congress is of great significance as it will sum up the experience and lessons accumulated in building socialism with Chinese characteristics and set the direction for political development in the next five years and a series of important guidelines and policies.

Japan's Kyodo News Agency said Monday that CPC General Secretary Hu Jintao's work report at the congress laid emphasis on the Scientific Outlook on Development and adhered to the principle of putting people first, thus shifting development from simply pursuing economic growth toward raising people's living standards and achieving social equality with a view to realizing a harmonious society.

The Mainichi Shimbun daily reported earlier that Hu's Scientific Outlook on Development deals with the challenges china is facing now, such as the growing income disparity, corruption and pollution.

The Financial Times issued an eight-page special report Tuesday on the CPC's national congress, using 16 articles to depict an overall picture of China.

The articles said China has enjoyed continuous economic growth for nearly 30 years and witnessed a double-digit growth rate in the past five years. The country has become the engine of world economic growth and has in the past decade become the most promising market in the eyes of many multinational corporations.

The Chinese leaders have adopted new modes of economic development, paying more attention to environmental protection, the special report said, adding that China is now playing an irreplaceable role in many international affairs.

The Hindu newspaper of India said in an editorial that the whole world has shown great interest in the policies that the CPC is to make at its 17th National Congress.

The Congress, which will decide the course of China's future political and economic development, will exert not only a great influence on China, but on the rest of the world as well.

Uruguay's La Republica newspaper said that China's importance in global economy and politics keeps growing and the world pays close attention to the country's development.

The CPC's 17th National Congress will study how to make the national economy grow in a more scientific manner, it said. A more scientific development of economy means a reduction of waste and corruption, it noted.

The CPC will also strive to find solutions to the problem of income gap between different social groups on the basis of building a harmonious society, it added.

The Overseas Chinese Journal of the United States has carried several articles recently, commenting positively on the achievements China has made in recent years under the leadership the CPC.

Since the 16th National Congress, the CPC has made efforts to improve the people's livelihood, starting from the fields that the people are most concerned with, including housing, health and education, the paper said.

The people have gained real benefits from the efforts, it commented.

In the past 30 years, the CPC has developed the concept of livelihood from providing adequate food and clothing, to building a well-off society and to initiating the Scientific Outlook on Development.

The CPC is ready to demonstrate to the world again that the country's development is for the people, the development relies onthe people and the fruits of development are enjoyed by the people,it added.

France's Nouvelles d'Europe newspaper said in an editorial thatin the past five years, the CPC and the Chinese government have adhered to its policy of putting people first and have been devoted to improving the people's living standard. They have won the support of the people, the paper said.

The CPC's 17th congress will attach great importance to various problems emerging from the economic and social development and find effective solutions to them, so as to bring more real benefits for the people, it commented.
