While it is the first time that BASF, one of the world's leading chemical companies, has held an exhibit at the China Marine Economy Expo (CMEE) in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, it firmly believes the platform will facilitate its business in the Chinese market and along the burgeoning 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road.

"It is an excellent platform for business promotion with many enterprises from both China and foreign countries participating particularly those along the Maritime Silk Road," a spokesperson from BASF told Beijing Review.

BASF has brought a variety of products to look for partners at the CMEE, including solutions for the sustainability of the marine economy as well as a range of innovations designed to enhance quality of life.

The CMEE, the only state-level comprehensive marine expo in China, debuted in Guangzhou in 2012 and has been held annually in Zhanjiang since 2014. As the most comprehensive marine expo in China, the CMEE aims to provide a platform to foster innovation and collaboration for the development of the marine economy as well as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It also promotes new technologies and materials, especially for the high-end manufacturing and service industries. Over the past five years, more than 11,000 enterprises from 83 countries have clinched deals worth some 200 billion yuan ($28.8 billion) at the international trade fair.

Zheng Daqing, BASF's Senior Vice President for Market and Business Development, Greater China, said, "The ocean is one of Earth's most valuable natural resources. Chemistry can help in both leveraging the ocean's resources and protecting people, cities and coastal infrastructure. Sustainability and innovation have been key factors in BASF's success for more than 150 years." The innovations for the marine economy showcased at BASF's booth focus on solutions to secure coastal energy supplies and protect marine ecosystems.

For China Railway Construction Corp. Ltd. (CRCC), a giant of railway construction in China, the CMEE means a platform for exploring new business and also for learning.

"This is the second time that CRCC has attended the event," said Gao Yong, Chief Engineer of CRCC's Business Managing and Planning Department. "Traditionally, CRCC focused its business on railway construction and municipal engineering, but we also developed multiple cutting-edge technologies in marine engineering. We hope the CMEE can help us find more partners to explore marine business opportunities. And as a late-comer, we also hope to learn from the forerunners of the marine economy by joining the CMEE."

The Thailand-based Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) has been a regular exhibitor since the CMEE was established in 2012. "The CMEE has helped contribute to our brand promotion in the Chinese market, particularly our aquatic products," said Zhuang Youfen, a manager of the CP Group's aquatic business department. "The CMEE has offered us many favorable conditions, for instance, the advantageous location for our booth. With promotion efforts in recent years, our products are very competitive in the Chinese market," Zhuang told Beijing Review.

During the CMEE this year, 12 sub-forums were also held to exchange opinions on port logistics, marine big data, marine environment and ecological protection, modern fisheries, marine biomedicine and aquatic animal healthcare.
