China is making progress in fighting against the coronavirus and is making effort to achieve its annual targets of social and economic development, said Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, on March 2.

Facing the severe challenge posed by the outbreak, the whole country is mobilized, with the most comprehensive, strict and thorough prevention and control measures having been taken, said Zhang, when answering questions at a briefing on the work of Security Council for March after China took over the presidency.

With China's arduous efforts, the positive momentum in the prevention and control of the epidemic is growing. The number of new cases is declining and that of cured cases is rising, said Zhang.

As of March 2, there were 125 newly confirmed cases in China's mainland and a total of 47, 204 patients have been cured and discharged from hospital, according to China's National Health Commission.

Zhang also said that China will continue to carry out international cooperation in an open, transparent and responsible manner.

"COVID-19 is a common challenge facing the entire humanity. China is fighting not just for itself, but also for the world," he said. "China treats its own people and people from other countries in the same way and applies prevention and control measures in an indiscriminate manner."

Guided by the vision of a community with a shared future for mankind, China is doing everything possible to contain the epidemic within its borders, and following very closely the changing situation in other parts of the world, Zhang said.

China is also sharing experience with relevant countries and international organizations and providing necessary assistance, contributing to the joint response to the outbreak and the maintenance of global public health security, he added.

While battling the epidemic, China is also keenly aware of its responsibility as the world's second-largest economy, Zhang said.

To minimize the economic impact of the outbreak, China is taking a series of measures, including policy support in fiscal, financial, taxation and industrial fields, to facilitate the restoration of work and production and to boost the economy, Zhang told the media.

"With the strong resilience of China's economy, broad domestic markets and sound industrial foundation, the positive trend of the Chinese economy remains unchanged," said Zhang.

"There is every reason to be confident in the future of China's economy," he said.
