THE MARKETS

Laptop Assembly Hub

In the first quarter, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality assembled 11 million laptops valued at 25.54 billion yuan ($4.06 billion), up 617 percent year on year, according to figures released by the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization.

The majority of the devices were exported, with an export value of 22.18 billion yuan ($3.53 billion), up 7.8 times from a year ago. Chongqing is building itself into a major center for laptop assembly, with its output of the computers estimated to account for 14 percent of the world's total. Chongqing will soon open a new international air cargo route to link itself with the United States and Australia and facilitate delivery of its IT products to the North American and Australian markets.

SNS Expansion

China has the largest and most active population of social media users, and that has created unique opportunities for companies hoping to engage with a vast and increasingly affluent market, according to a new study from McKinsey & Co. Inc., a global management consulting firm.

Of the 5,700 Internet users surveyed, 95 percent are registered on a social networking site (SNS), the highest proportion worldwide.

It also has the world's most active social media population, with 91 percent of respondents saying they visited an SNS in the previous six months, compared with 30 percent in Japan and 67 percent in the United States.

Two thirds of those surveyed said they rely on online recommendations from friends before shopping. Therefore, the McKinsey study suggests companies should note the unique function of SNS in influencing consumers' purchasing decisions in China.
