Travel by train will be surging on May 5 in China, with passengers expected to take 6.15 million railway trips in the day when the five-day May Day holiday comes to an end and people make return journeys from vacations.

The China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (China Railway) said an additional 421 passenger trains were put into service on May 5 to cope with the surging passenger flow while railway authorities across the country are maintaining strict anti-epidemic measures to prevent the resurgence of coronavirus cases.

On May 4, total train trips nationwide hit 5.14 million, when an additional 225 trains were put into operation, China Railway said.

The high railway passenger flow comes after a relaxation of travel restrictions amid dwindling COVID-19 cases in the country. One confirmed case arriving from overseas was reported on the Chinese mainland on May 4, and there were no new domestically transmitted cases, the National Health Commission said on May 5.
