Joint action for better prospects

The Global Development Initiative (GDI), proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the General Debate of the UN General Assembly in September last year, is being well-received. One year on, the initiative is drawing China and many other nations together in pursuit of the goals laid out in the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 2030 Agenda, adopted by all UN member states in 2015, proposed 17 goals that aim to end poverty, protect the planet's environment and improve the lives and prospects of its people. In line with these goals, the GDI calls for the continued prioritization of global development, taking a people-centered approach, ensuring all parties benefit, using innovation as a driver, realizing harmony between humans and nature, and taking results-oriented actions.

The initiative also calls on countries to steer global development toward a new stage of balanced, coordinated and inclusive growth.

China is a powerhouse of world economic growth, and it has played a major role in ensuring stable global progress. Notably, China eradicated absolute poverty in 2020, achieving the poverty reduction goal of the 2030 Agenda 10 years ahead of schedule. In addition, the Belt and Road Initiative it promotes has provided a leading platform for advancing regional and global cooperation. China's achievements in containing the spread of COVID-19 have contributed to stabilizing the global industry chain.

In June, while speaking at the High-Level Dialogue on Global Development, President Xi announced a host of new measures China will adopt under the banner of the GDI, including the establishment of the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund, a global development promotion center and a global knowledge network for development. These initiatives are part of China's efforts to help coordinate and mobilize global resources.

No matter how the international landscape evolves, the aspiration of people around the world for a better life will not change. The international community should take the GDI as an opportunity to strengthen dialogue and exchanges, tighten the bond of cooperation and deepen the convergence of interests.
