In an interview in Dali, Yunnan Province, on October 9, ahead of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), Faizal Shani, Consul General of Malaysia to Kunming, shared his thoughts on the importance of living in harmony with nature. This is an edited excerpt of his views:

Nowadays, when we are only focusing on economic development without putting the focus on preservation and sustainability, in the end, we will be on the losing side. So this year, we are looking forward to the Kunming COP15. The agenda is not just to share views, share new perspectives on how to preserve what we call the coexistence between human and nature. But we are looking at how to adopt or come up with a mechanism that can promote stability. The ecosystem is to be preserved so that it can be sustained for the next generation.

The COP15 agenda is big. That's why it's known to be a platform, not just the government, but it involves many entities, think tanks and companies. They come together to give the idea on how to preserve, to ensure we as humans can live together with nature and the ecosystem as one, and to ensure it will be sustained and preserved for our next generation.

So the most important thing I would like to see is the ability for us to use one platform, a multilateral platform, to achieve a policy that can help not just the developing countries, but the emerging economies and the developed countries to work together. There are issues in terms of who's going to provide financial support to ensure the agenda of a green environment, a new environment, and the agenda of dealing with climate change can be achieved and carbon emissions can be reduced. So are we looking at all the countries in the world to share this burden.
