Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward four principles for building a China-Central Asia community with a shared future, namely, mutual assistance, common development, universal security and everlasting friendship, when he delivered a keynote speech at the China-Central Asia Summit in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province in northwest China on May 19. The heads of state of the five Central Asian countries, namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, also attended the gathering.

The vision of a China-Central Asia community with a shared future came into being at a virtual summit commemorating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Central Asian countries last year. Turning it into reality is essential for ensuring the fundamental interests and bright future of their peoples in the new era and brings the world one step closer to a community with a shared future.

Today's world is full of uncertainty; people hope for a brighter future but are unsure about what's to come. Facing common challenges, no person or country can remain insulated.

President Xi first put forward the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity in 2013 and has reiterated and interpreted it on many occasions. When delivering a speech at the UN Office at Geneva, Switzerland, on January 18, 2017, titled Working Together to Build a Community With a Shared Future for Humanity, Xi expressed his hope for the future by using the quote: "Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno."

The quote is a Latin phrase inscribed in the dome of the Federal Palace of Switzerland, which means "one for all, all for one." The quote emphasizes the need to think about the wellbeing of both current and future generations. In this regard, China has not only talked the talk, but also walked the walk.

China is committed to further opening up and providing new opportunities for the world. In 2013, China proposed the Belt and Road Initiative to boost connectivity along and beyond the ancient Silk Road routes. As of early 2023, China had signed more than 200 documents with 151 countries and 32 international organizations for cooperation under the framework of the initiative.

China works toward mutual benefit in the spirit of advancing the greater good.

In November 2018, the world's first import-themed national-level expo—the China International Import Expo (CIIE)—was launched. The First CIIE attracted 172 countries, regions and international organizations. Since then, no matter the challenges that have arisen, the expo has taken place every year.

China contributes to safeguarding global public health security. In response to COVID-19, the country turned its vaccines into a global public good. It sent medical teams to other countries as requested and also provided large quantities of badly needed materials. It also hosted international seminars via video link to exchange ideas on jointly fighting the pandemic.

China is also making a big push toward peaking its carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060. Whether it's addressing climate change or reducing global poverty, China is playing an important role. It is also ready to share its knowledge and effective practices.

In the face of global challenges, China upholds the UN-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law. It is an active participant in UN peacekeeping missions and is the largest contributor of peacekeepers among the permanent members of the UN Security Council.

From the UN to the Group of 20, from APEC to BRICS, China's involvement is conducive to forging a greater synergy. To address emerging security threats, China advocates a new approach that champions dialogue over confrontation, partnerships over military alliances, and win-win outcomes over zero-sum games, joining many other countries in rejecting outdated power politics.

The building of a community with a shared future aims to make the world a better place to live. The community is characterized by lasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness and inclusiveness, and a clean and beautiful environment. It is China's vision and action plan for advancing human progress.
