"One would rather have a bed in Puxi than a house in Pudong." This saying for decades reflected the lack of regard for Pudong in Shanghai. Just on the other side of the Huangpu River, Pudong, a sparsely populated farmland area, was long neglected until April 1990 when the Chinese Government decided to set it up as a pilot area for opening up. After 28 years of development, Pudong is now one of the most vigorous centers of finance and hi-tech innovation in the country.
