A press conference in the lead-up to the Fifth Session of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) was held on March 4. Fu Ying, who has been spokesperson for the annual NPC session for five consecutive years, met the press.

When asked by an Indian journalist how she viewed the direction of Sino-Indian relations, Fu reminded the journalist to put on his headset so that he could understand her answer. When assessing Sino-Indian relations, Fu said one should see not only the tree, but also the woods. She pointed out that China and India are two major developing countries which are facing different problems and challenges in their development paths. The two nations should improve mutual understanding in order to solve their respective problems. Even if there are disagreements that cannot be settled for now, they should not cease moving forward.

According to Fu, Sino-Indian relations have achieved today's results because on the one hand they have been addressing disagreements, while on the other hand they have been constantly promoting cooperation.

Sino-U.S. relations are also the focus of media attention at the press conference. When asked how to view the Sino-U.S. relations in the context of U.S. President Donald Trump's ever changing remarks regarding China, Fu noted that cooperation remains the theme of two countries' relations at present, in spite of U.S. adjustment to both its domestic and foreign policies. U.S. policy changes under the new government will have an impact globally, including on relations with China, while China expects the impact to be "positive."
