Gen Z is warming up to the Beijing 2022 Games

With the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 around the corner, an international youth dialogue for Gen Zs took place in Beijing on January 14, bringing together Chinese and foreign youth from 16 different countries.

Gen Zs, born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s, are coming into their own and are ready to leave their mark on the world. As one of the most promising industries in China, winter sports have made many of this generation fall in love with the icier side of athletics.  

The blending of Gen Z and sports will further bridge the gap between Chinese and foreign youth and deepen the interpretation of the Olympic Spirit by means of cultural exchange, Lu Cairong, Vice President of China International Communications Group (CICG), told attendees. “The 2022 Olympic Winter Games drive more than 1.3 billion people in China to partake in ice and snow sports, presenting people with a new way of contributing to Olympics-inspired development,” Lu added. 

According to Chen Shi, Deputy Chief Editor of CICG, the future of the world belongs to the younger generations. Young people around the world share new ideals and responsibilities to promote social development. 

Merna Al Nasser, a Jordan student from Renmin University of China, said that through the event’s varied visits and exchanges, she gained a better understanding of the preparations for the Beijing 2022 Games as well as the widespread influence and meaning that come with. 

“This is a valuable experience for me as a university student. It would be my great honor to witness and experience first-hand the development of winter sports in China,” she said. 

Hosted by the CICG, the event also took participants on a winter sports experience tour, including a visit to an ice sports center where they had a go at curling and ice hockey.
