The number of people subscribing to third-generation (3G) mobile phone services in China increased by 47.33 million in the first half of this year, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Taobao, China's largest online shopping site, said the number of hammer sales increased by 598 percent, and the number of flashlights and lifejackets sold increased nearly 20 times from July 21-23 after the heavy rains and flooding in Beijing on July 21.
