Zhao Qizheng was born in Beijing in 1940. He graduated, in 1963, from the University of Science and Technology of China, majoring in experimental nuclear physics. He was then engaged in scientific research until 1984 and still holds three patents of invention. From 1984, he serves as Vice Mayor of Shanghai, Director-general of the Management Committee of Shanghai Pudong New Area and Minister of the State Council Information Office of China. He is now Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, Renmin University of China.

Mr. Zhao's publications include Introducing China to the World-Zhao Qizheng and the Art of Communication (New World Press, 2006), America and Americans through Chinese Eyes (China Intercontinental Press, 2005), Introducing China to the World-Zhao Qizheng's Speeches and Dialogues (New World Press, 2005) and New Century·New Pudong (Fudan University Press, 1994).

"Dr. Palau and I are both rather pure species of our two different cultures. Because both of us were very straightforward during our discussions, we were able to breach the barriers posed by different ideologies and exchange views on a wide range of topics. It also set me thinking about many issues which I was originally not so familiar with. I was deeply touched when Dr. Palau told me he loved China. And because we were sincere and honest, the differences of beliefs did not constitute a barrier between us, neither did the difference in language or educational background. It is clear that out common objective is to promote global harmony."-Mr. Zhao Qizheng said at the same press conference.
