Humanitarian Assistance for Displaced Pakistanis
Pakistan asks the international community to help look after the millions of refugees displaced by its antiterror operations in the northwest

Pakistan asks the international community to help look after the millions of refugees displaced by its antiterror operations in the northwest, said Pakistan's ambassador to China.

"We need help in meeting requirements pertaining to shelter, food, medicine, non-food items, water, sanitation and hygiene," Ambassador Masood Khan told a press conference in Beijing on May 26. "Cash donations are what the displaced families need most."

Pakistan is currently carrying out military operations in the Swat Valley and other parts of the North West Frontier Province against Taliban terrorists. The offensive has resulted in the dislocation of more than 2.5 million people.

Pakistan has devised a national action plan to meet this humanitarian challenge, Khan said. The federal government has made an initial grant of 1 billion rupees ($12.5 million) for the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, he said. It has deployed trained officers to coordinate relief operations and set up major humanitarian hubs, he added.

"Despite reliance mainly on our indigenous resources, we need help from the international community, especially from our friends," Khan said.

The Chinese Government has donated $1 million in cash as well as 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) in relief materials such as large tents, generators and water filtration plants, according to the ambassador.

The Pakistani Embassy in Beijing is hosting a bazaar featuring traditional Pakistani food and handicrafts on June 7 to gather donations.

How to Make a Donation

Voluntary cash donations for the internally displaced people in Pakistan can be deposited in the following bank account:

Bank of China Head Office

No.1 Fuxingmennei Dajie Xicheng District, Beijing

Account Number: 01672868093001

Swift Code: BKCHCNBJ

Donations received in this account will be transferred to the Pakistan Prime Minister's Special Fund for Victims of Terrorism.
