A chronology of major strong earthquakes since the founding of New China in 1949

On August 15, 1950, an 8.5-magnitude earthquake hits Zayu County in Tibet, killing about 4,000 people.

On March 8, 1966, 6.8- and 7.2-magnitude earthquakes respectively jolt Longyao and Ningjin counties in Hebei, killing a total of 8,064 people.

On January 5, 1970, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake occurrs in Tonghai County, Yunnan, killing 15,621 people and making it the decade's deadliest.

On February 4, 1975, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake strikes Haicheng County in Liaoning, killing 1,328 people.

On July 28, 1976, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hits Tangshan City in Hebei, killing 242,000 people, the highest quake death toll in the country in the 20th century.

On November 6, 1988, 7.6- and 7.2-magnitude earthquakes respectively jolt Lancang and Gengma counties in Yunnan, killing 743 people.

On May 12, 2008, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake strikes Wenchuan County in Sichuan. Over 69,000 people dead and more than 17,000 missing.

On April 14, 2010, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai, killing 2,220 people.

On April 20, 2013, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hits Lushan County in Sichuan, killing 193 people as of April 23.
