The 2014 China Open tennis tournament took place in Beijing from September 21 to October 5.

END OF AN ERA: Chinese tennis player Li Na smiles during her retirement ceremony on September 30. Li formally announced her retirement on September 19 due to chronic knee injuries.

BAD NEWS: Defending champion Serena Williams of the United States withdrew from the tournament on October 3 due to injury.

NEW CHAMPION: Maria Sharapova of Russia holds her first China Open trophy after beating against Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 2-1 on October 5.

FIVE TIMES A WINNER: Novak Djokovic of Serbia kisses his fifth China Open trophy after beating against Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 2-0 on October 5.
