A. Comparisons With 1958

1. Gross domestic product(GDP): 2.452 billion yuan ($360 million) in 1958; 595.6 billion yuan ($87.2 billion) in 2007. Guangxi's GDP ranked 17th in China last year, up from 22nd in 1958.

2. Per capita GDP: Up from 113 yuan ($16.54) in 1958 to 12,555 yuan ($1,838.21) in 2007.

3. Fiscal revenue: Up from 466 million yuan ($68.23 million) in 1958 to 70.39 billion yuan ($10.31 billion) in 2007.

4. Total fixed-asset investment: Up from 347 million yuan ($50.81 million) to 297 billion yuan ($43.48 million).

5. The admission rate for primary school students: Up from 30.08 percent in 1958 to 99.08 percent in July 2007.

6. Gross admission rate to junior middle school: Up from 16.33 percent in 1958 to 104.33 percent in 2007.

7. Primary schools: In 1958 there were 23,208 primary schools in the province. After optimization, the number was cut to 14,873.

8. Junior middle schools: 2,142 in 2008, which is 14.4 times the number in 1958.

9. High schools: 522 in 2008, which is 6.2 times the number in 1958.

10. Institutes of higher learning: Up from 3 in 1958 to 72 in 2008,a 24-fold increase.

B. Comparisons With 1978

1. Total import and export volume: $269 million in 1978, rising to $9.28 billion in 2007,representing an annual rise of 13 percent.

2. Per-capita disposable income for urban residents: 289 yuan ($42.31) in 1978 and 12,200 yuan ($1,786.24) in 2007, a 7.54-fold rise after adjusting for price increases.

3.Per-capita net income for farmers: Up from 120 yuan ($17.57) in 1978, to 3,224 yuan ($472.04) in 2007,a 6.52-fold rise after adjusting for price increases.

4. Hospital beds per thousand people: 1.28 in 1978, rising to 3.09 in 2007,a 2.4-fold increase.

5. Rural population in absolute poverty: 15 million in 1986 (China started state-organized poverty alleviation schemes in that year) dropping to 650,000 in 2007.
