Most of the 31 Beijing-based competition venues for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be completed by the end of the year except for the National Stadium and the Olympic Village, an official said on Wednesday.

Twenty and ten venues and auxiliary facilities will be inaugurated in the third and fourth quarters respectively, Wu Jinajun, chief engineer and spokesman for the Beijing 2008 Project Construction Headquarters Office told a press conference at the Beijing Olympic Media Center.

The National Stadium, the main stadium for the Olympics, is expected to be completed by the end of March 2008, he reiterated, adding that most of the Beijing-based projects are in the tail-up phase or under fit-up and decoration.

Regarding the "Good Luck Beijing" test events, Wu said all the 27 competition venues to be used for the purpose this year will be ready on time.

Generally speaking, he said, the major goals set up for the projects, including their quality, safety, time limit, function and cost, "are under effective control."

The projects are characterized by the use of new energies, application of environment-friendly technologies and materials. 69 new energy schemes have been implemented, covering the use of solar, geothermal, waster water, wind and other sources, he said.

"Environmental protection is embodied in every detail of the construction," covering noise control, forestation, water recycling, natural ventilation and many other areas," Wu said.
