Liu Xiang to Be Absent from the Games' Opening

Chinese "flying man" Liu Xiang has confirmed he won't attend the opening ceremony of the upcoming Olympics to make way for training that has been disrupted by a leg injury, the Yanzhao Metropolis Daily reports.

Liu's remarks put an end to heated prediction over who the flag bearer will be to lead the Chinese delegation in the parade at the August 8 ceremony. Liu and basketball center player Yao Ming were the favorite candidates.

An insider from Liu's assisting team told the paper that the defending champion has been under great pressure due to his injury and the notable progress made by the Cuban athlete Dayron Robles in recent races.

The promising star broke the world 110m hurdles record by clocking 12.87 seconds at the IAAF Golden Spike World Athletics Tour meeting in Ostrava June 12, 2008.

However, Liu has repeatedly said he will try his best to keep calm in face of Robles excellent performance and use the rival record as momentum.

His coach Sun Haiping said he will help Liu Xiang to return to peak fitness ahead of the final through intensive training.

The men's 110m hurdles final is set to take place on August 21 at the National Stadium, or the Bird's Nest.
