Since its return to China in 1999, the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) has witnessed great success in the implementation of the "one country, two systems" policy, an idea proposed by late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping during the early 1980s, as well as the Basic Law of the MSAR, approved by the National People's Congress (NPC) and effective December 20, 1999.

During the past 10 years, Macao has enjoyed stable politics, a prosperous economy, and a harmonious society. People live and work in peace and contentment.

As a region that blends Eastern and Western cultures, the MSAR is a diverse place. Apart from developing its economy, the region has also protected its special local culture. It has not only realized fast and sustainable economic growth and rapid social progress, but also strengthened people's awareness of and identification with traditional culture. People in Macao are confident in the region's future.
