On the 27th day of the 1st month on Tibetan calendar, some aristocratic youths in Lhasa would gather on the riverside of the Drifting Sand River in the northern suburbs of Lhasa to participate in the horse race festival called "Zongchog Shanbei" (horse race at the back of the Potala Palace) in Tibetan). Aristocrats wore luxurious clothes and red silk tassels around their hat that ancient heroes wore when returning home in triumph from battle. Their ancestors won battle honors that led to aristocrat titles, so the offspring inherited and enjoyed the glory for generations. Picture shows riders with servants clustered around heading up the race track in great dignity.
