A collision of two passenger trains near Zibo, a city in east China's Shandong Province, had killed 71 people as of April 29, according to railway authorities. There were also 416 people wounded, including four French nationals.

Preliminary investigations ruled out the possibility of terrorism and blamed the accident on human error. Two high-ranking railway officials were dismissed on April 28, pending an investigation.

After emergency repairs the line reopened on the morning of April 29.
