Workers remove wrecked trains from the collision site at a railway station in Chenzhou, central China's Hunan Province, on July 1.

At around 2:30 a.m. on June 29, passenger train K9017, which arrived at the railway station earlier than scheduled, crashed into the side of another passenger train that was departing. Both engines and six carriages derailed, leaving three dead and 63 injured.

According to officials with the Ministry of Railways, initial investigations attributed the accident to a brake failure of the incoming train.

Rail transportation to and from Chenzhou, a major hub in the north-south trunk railway between Beijing and Guangzhou, was suspended for nearly 12 hours as a result of the collision.
