The equivalent of 210 million bottles
The average daily consumption of drinking water at the Expo site was 1,600 tons, according to a report by the Shanghai Bureau of Expo Coordination. At that rate, by the end of the Expo, visitors had consumed the equivalent of 210 million 500-ml bottles of water. Fortunately for the environment, water was provided in environmentally friendly drinking fountains, not plastic bottles.

Visitors and staff at the Expo site were estimated to consume 200 tons of vegetables each day. Vegetables were supplied by 40 designated production bases around China.
The work of the Expo volunteers required both physical strength and intellect. When the first batch of volunteers from Shanghai's Fudan University completed their service at the Expo site, they left a special gift for their successors—a guidebook filled with detailed information about where to find toilets, drinking fountains or how long it normally takes to enter the Saudi Arabia Pavilion. The guidebook was compiled with contributions from all volunteers and was completed in 21 days. The word count of the book is 377,000 characters.
