Steel Group Head

Zhang Xiaogang, President of Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corp. (Ansteel), was elected chairman of the World Steel Association (Worldsteel) for a one-year term, at the association's 45th Annual Conference held in Paris on October 12, the first Chinese to take the helm of the global industry association.

One of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world, the Brussels-based Worldsteel represents approximately 170 steel producers, which account for 85 percent of the world's steel output. Founded in 1967, it has become a communication platform for the global steel industry.

Zhang, 57, has served as general manager of Ansteel since January 2007. After serving as president of China Steel Industry Association from 2007 to 2009, Zhang was elected vice president of Worldsteel in 2010, the first from the Chinese mainland. Zhang's election as Worldsteel's president is seen as an indication of China's increasing influence on the international stage. It will promote the Chinese steel industry's exchanges with its foreign counterparts.

Fencing Champion

Li Na, Chinese fencer, claimed the gold medal in women's epee at the 2011 World Fencing Championships in Catania, Italy, in October 2011. This is Li's first ever individual World Championships title and also the first gold medal in the women's individual epee event for China.

Li won the bronze medal in the women's team epee event in the 2000 Olympic Games. At the 2006 World Fencing Championships, Li, together with her teammates, won the gold medal in the epee team event. In 2007, Li was chosen the best female epee athlete by the International Fencing Federation for her achievements. She reached fourth place in the individual epee event at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Li retired after the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, and came back to the sport this April after giving birth to a boy. She is now preparing for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Troubled Entrepreneur

Ma Yun, Chairman and President of Alibaba Group, parent company of China's top business-to-consumer online retail platform Taobao Mall, has recently come under fire as small vendors in the Taobao Mall deliberately disrupted its operations to protest abrupt fee hikes that the mall claimed to charge.

Ma founded Alibaba.com in 1999, and it is now one of the biggest business-to-business online selling websites in the world. Its primary intention is helping more companies with their businesses and it is now a Hong Konglisted company.

The Alibaba Group consists of top business-to-business site Alibaba.com, business-to-consumer site Taobao Mall and consumer-to-consumer site Taobao marketplace. Alibaba Group and its affiliated entities now have more than 22,000 employees across some 70 cities and regions in the world.

"The last three years have been the most peaceful period for cross-Straits relations in the past 60 years. The mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) have signed 15 agreements and we have seen an all-around 'peace bonus' brought by the improvement of the cross-Straits relations."

Chiang Pin-kung, Chairman of the SEF, in Taipei on October 18, saying that the cross-Straits peace had been hard-earned and should be treasured

"The rapid growth in property prices has been markedly contained, as prices in some cities begin to retreat. The government's control efforts have achieved positive results and the property market is heading toward the macro control direction."

Sheng Laiyun, spokesman of the National Bureau of Statistics of China, at a press conference on national economic statistics for the first three quarters of 2011 in Beijing on October 18

"Provinces and states are the backbones that sustain economic cooperation between China and the United States. I hope the dialogue of governors between the two sides becomes the propeller to push Sino-U.S. economic and trade relations forward."

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai, in his address to the China-U.S. Governors Dialogue held in Beijing on October 19

"Libya has turned a new page on its history. We hope Libya can launch an inclusive political transition process as early as possible … and start economic reconstruction in order to enable the Libyan people to lead peaceful and happy lives."
