The Fifth Beijing Fringe Festival took place in 12 theaters in Beijing from September 3 to 30, staging over 60 dramas from 15 countries and regions such as Britain, Germany, France and China. The festival was inspired by the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which has been held annually in Scotland since the 1950s, as a way to promote experimental and avant-garde performances in China.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE: An adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's magical realistic masterpiece Cien años de soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude) is staged by Hong Kong's Alice Theater Laboratory on September 21

DREAMWALKER: Dreamwalker is performed onstage on September 14, in a show that incorporates multimedia equipment to enhance the performance

WATER GHOST: Theater SanTuoQi from Beijing rehearses Water Ghost for the last time before putting on performances on September 12 and 13

SAVANNAH BAY: Savannah Bay, adapted from the novel of the same name by French author Marguerite Duras, is staged by the Austria United Words of Theater on September 8

PAPER DRAMA: Kugelmenschen, or Ball Man, staged by The Paper Theater Nurnberg of Germany, tells a philosophical story with color and light against a paper wall backdrop on September 5
