Premier Wen Jiabao sends crucial signals to the international community at UN headquarters

China, for its part, always advises other developing countries to explore suitable development models for themselves rather than duplicate the Chinese model, he added. China is only one of the rapidly emerging developing countries in the world today. Despite its rising international profile, Pang believes that China will not change its policies of upholding justice in the international community and not interfering in other countries' internal affairs. Unlike some Western countries, China does not attach "political strings" to its foreign assistance, Pang said. It would not pressure other countries to use its concepts or development model, he said.

"China should first of all do well in handling its own affairs-maintaining political and social stability and economic development, and developing good relations with all other countries," he said.

It is unreasonable to regard China as the only option to address the current financial crisis, Pang said. In his view, the problem, which originated in the West, requires a concerted effort by the international community, especially Western countries. Chen believes China's sound economic growth is a major contribution to world financial stability.

More Actions

Premier Wen Jiabao promised that China would do the following to facilitate the realization of the Millennium Development Goals at the UN High-level Event on MDGs on September 25:

Double the number of China-sponsored agricultural technology demonstration centers in other developing countries to 30, increase the number of agricultural experts and technicians sent abroad by 1,000 to double the original figure and provide 3,000 agricultural training opportunities in China to other developing countries in the next five years;

Contribute $30 million to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to establish a trust fund to help other developing countries enhance agricultural productivity;

Increase exports and assistance to countries with severe food shortages;

Provide 10,000 scholarships to students from other developing countries to study in China, train 1,500 schoolmasters and teachers from African countries, staff and equip the 30 hospitals China has built in African countries, and train 1,000 doctors, nurses and hospital management staff in these countries in the next five years;

Cancel the outstanding interest-free loans extended to the least developed countries that mature before the end of 2008 and offer zero-tariff treatment to 95 percent of their exports;

Build 100 small-scale clean energy projects, including small hydropower, solar power and bio-gas projects, for other developing countries in the next five years.
