The latter half of July, and first half of August, constitute the major flood season for most parts of China. The state disaster prevention headquarters has warned that the Yangtze River, Hanjiang River, and Songhua River basins are the focus of flood prevention work this year.

The levels of the lower reaches of both the Yangtze and Hanjiang are still high. Levels in the Songhua and its branches are still rising. Heavy rainfall is expected to add to the flooding in the Songhua Basin, which is already facing its worst floods in a century.

Although the level of the Yangtze River is falling, its embankments have been weakened, and banks along the Songhua River also need to be strengthened.
