Miniature of China's Economic Boom
Share

The city of Shenzhen was established in 1979 and became a special economic zone in 1980. During the past 25 years, Shenzhen has developed from a frontier town to an energetic garden-like city with strong economic strength, complete urban functions, fine ecological environment, a highly civilized society and a sound legal system.

The city's goal is to speed up its modernization process, enhance its international competitiveness and make efforts to build itself into an international city with Chinese characteristics and style. Shenzhen may be considered a miniature example of China's success in economic opening up and social reform.

The fast development of Shenzhen is attributed to China's policy of reform and opening up and the opportunities brought by the integration of the global economy, as well as the city's increasingly improved investment environment.

First, Shenzhen has taken the lead in building a complete market economy and has made great strides in this regard. Now the main resources that economic and social development requires are all allocated by the market, including human resources, technology and capital.

Second, Shenzhen's booming development owes to its geographical location. It is located at the estuary of the Pearl River Delta, adjoining Hong Kong, which provides it with geographical advantages for developing logistics. It has the largest land port of both goods and passengers. Its seaport is the fourth largest in the world and its airport the fourth largest in China.

Finally, Shenzhen opened up to the outside world earlier than other cities. The government follows international norms with a strong sense of service and efficiency. Shenzhen has also practiced the system of serving large-sized enterprises and providing service to the world's Top 500 companies investing in Shenzhen and other domestic- or foreign-funded enterprises. Enterprises in Shenzhen enjoy the most favorable tax breaks granted in the country, with the corporate income tax rate standing at 15 percent, much lower than the rate of 33 percent in other cities.

Shenzhen is a city of migrants from all over the country, it is a place where talents converge, the average age of the population is only 30 years old. As a typical migrant city, Shenzhen has formed a unique culture, diversified and full of innovative energy.

Through the continuous efforts of the Municipal Government, Shenzhen will provide foreign investors with better prospects for development. Shenzhen welcomes people to invest and share in the achievements of reform and opening up in the city.
