Soccer superstar David Beckham has announced that he will retire from football at the end of the current season. The former England captain, and current Paris Saint Germain star has become known over the years as more than just a footballer.

With his marriage to "Posh" Spice Girl, Victoria, Beckham is now an international brand, and one of the most recognized faces in the world. Despite being considered past his playing peak, the decision by Beckham has still triggered a great deal of debate and reaction from fans across the world, including here in China.

One of the most recognizable athletes on the planet is to retire, after a career laden with trophies and glamour.

38-year-old David Beckham, who recently won a league title in a fourth country with Paris Saint-Germain, has become a global superstar since making his debut with Manchester United in 1992.

Many Chinese soccer fans say they'll miss the star.

Beijing resident Wang Yi said, "I think it's an inevitable trend, but it's still a shame. He's done very well wherever he's played, in the British Premier League, the U.S. league, and now France."

Beijing resident Ma Sisi said, "I like Beckham a lot. I like his look and his zest for soccer. It's such a pity that he's going to retire."

Beckham is no stranger to China.

His face is everywhere, on billboards, TV and magazine adverts.

Earlier this year, he was appointed China's first global football ambassador, to promote the sport in the country.

"I enjoy responsibilities as an ambassador," he said.

With global fame that extends way beyond football, the 38-year old former England captain says he's still got plenty to do.

After a 21 year playing career that's brought him titles in England, Spain, the United States and France, David Beckham is now set to continue making the most of his commercial appeal.

It's unlikely that we've seen the last of him.
