Privately Owned Restaurant

Liu Guixian (R) poses with a foreign reporter in the early 1980s

Located in Cuihua Hutong in Dongcheng District, downtown Beijing, Yue Bin Restaurant (literally "to make customers happy") was set up in 1980 by Liu Guixian and her husband Guo Peiji, both of who were chefs.

The initiative for running the restaurant, according to Liu, had two aims--earn money and make good use of their professions.

The couple opened a branch restaurant named Yue Xian in a nearby hutong three years later.

"Being wholehearted in cooking; being active in innovation; being sincere to customers; being kind to staff; and being alert on management," Liu unveiled the secret of her success.
