In August 1980, the establishment of the first special economic zone (SEZ) approved in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province. During the reform and opening up process, Shenzhen SEZ played a leading role as a trial field, creating many experimental launches, including price reform, transfer of enterprises' property rights, and housing reform. Afterwards, the SEZs were successfully set up in coastal areas of Zhuhai, Shantou, Xiamen and Hainan in south China.
