As we know, China is renowned as the Kingdom of Bicycles. This may soon become a thing of the past, as bicycles are gradually replaced by an increasing number of private cars.
Against the backdrop of energy shortages and rising oil prices, the launch of Car Free Day nationwide is undoubtedly beneficial in reducing traffic jams. It also can help improve the environment and reduce the consumption of gasoline to some extent, which is now too expensive worldwide. However, it is not a panacea, therefore it cannot solve the problem completely.
The reason for congestion in many major cities is attributable to the increasing number of private cars and incomplete urban public transportation systems.
The Car Free Day move needs to be well carried out, instead of just imposing a slogan, and some measures should be taken to cope with traffic blocks. We will have to control the number of private cars if necessary, while developing and upgrading the transportation network and encouraging city residents to choose public transportation. Once this has been done, only then will we not encounter traffic jams while going to work or just traveling around.
