After Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas kidnapped two Israeli soldiers on July 12, war broke out between Israel and Lebanon. The fighting ended on August 14, and UN peacekeeping troops began patrolling southern Lebanon, a Hezbollah stronghold. Hundreds of people were killed during the war, most of them civilians.
