Urumqi Deregulates Traffic Control in Riot-hit Area
Share

The Urumqi government Tuesday ended traffic control in the Erdaoqiao area, one of the hardest-hit places in the July 5 riot.

As of Tuesday afternoon, most of the shops in the area had resumed business, and traffic was back to normal. But the famous International Grand Bazaar and the nearby Carrefour supermarket remained closed.

A Uyghur boy who runs a photo stall in the Erdaoqiao market told Xinhua that the number of customers had increased since the traffic control was cancelled.

He said although it is now the high season for sight-seeing in Urumqi, his photo business was badly hit due to the riot. He hopes it will improve better with the coming of more tourists.

The Erdaoqiao area is home to many shops selling souvenirs in typical Uyghur style, and one of the Top 10 tourism sites in Urumqi.
