Major Figures on Residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and Foreigners Covered by 2010 Population Census

In accordance with the Regulations on National Population Census, China carried out its 6th national population census with zero hour of November 1, 2010 as the reference time. The census covered, for the first time, residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan and foreigners living within the territory of China. Released as follows are major figures concerning population of the above category* who received census enumeration.

I. Total Population Covered

The census covered 234,829 residents from Hong Kong SAR, 21,201 residents from Macao SAR, 170,283 residents from Taiwan, and 593,832 foreigners residing in the territory of China and receiving census enumeration, totaling 1020,145 persons.

II. Sex Composition

Of the population covered, 605821 persons were males, and 414324 persons were females.

Of all residents covered from Hong Kong SAR, there were 141,321 males and 93,508 females. Of all residents covered from Macao SAR, there were 11,708 males and 9,493 females. Of all residents covered from Taiwan, there were 116,547 males and 53,736 females. Of all foreigners covered, there were 336,245 males and 257,587 females.

III. Duration of Stay

Of the population covered, 103,754 persons stayed in China for less than three months, 90,078 persons stayed for three to six months, 143,210 persons stayed for six to 12 months, 183,001 persons stayed for one to two years, 249,668 persons stayed for two to five years, and 250,434 persons stayed for more than five years.

IV. Purpose of Staying in the Mainland of China

Of the population covered, 204,962 persons came to the mainland of China for business, 201,955 persons came for employment, 202,482 persons came for study, 186,648 persons came for settlement, 100,113 persons came to visit relatives, and 123,985 persons came for other purposes.

V. Geographic Distribution

Of the population covered, 316,138 persons stayed in Guangdong Province, 208,602 persons stayed in Shanghai Municipality, 107,445 persons stayed in Beijing Municipality, 64,177 persons stayed in Jiangsu Province, 62,564 persons stayed in Fujian Province, 47,396 persons stayed in Yunnan Province, 36,380 persons stayed in Zhejiang Province, 33,098 persons stayed in Shandong Province, 23,834 persons stayed in Liaoning Province, and 23,445 persons stayed in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The remaining 97,066 persons stayed in other provinces, autonomous regions or municipalities.

VI. Composition of Nationality of Foreigners

Of all foreigners covered, 120,750 were from the Republic of Korea, 71,493 the United States, 66,159 from Japan, 39,776 from Myanmar, 36,205 from Viet Nam, 19,990 from Canada, 15,087 from France, 15,051 from India, 14,446 from Germany, and 13,286 from Australia. The remaining 181,589 persons came from other countries.

Note:

Referring to population of residents from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreigners who had stayed, by the reference time of the census, for more than three months, or planned to stay for more than three months in the territory of China, excluding residents from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and foreigners who came to China for a short stay such as business trip or tourism. "Territory" here refers to the territory of customs, thus not including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
