Elderly people in China are now enjoying a secure life with the rapid development of the country's economy and rapid progress in society. They now live happier and longer lives than ever before. Statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics show that China is home to 145 million people aged 60 years and above, accounting for 11 percent of the country's population, and that this group is growing at a rate of over 3 percent, meaning the country has become an aging society.

Because it is an important virtue for Chinese to respect and support the elderly, the problems related to an aging society have drawn close attention from all circles.

China has established a system to protect and serve elderly people's legal rights and interests. The country has gradually developed elderly social insurance, social relief facilities, medical care services and social welfare projects, and applied the minimum living standard protection system for those who are unable to work and receive no support.

China is incorporating the aging problem into its future development plans, which include establishing an old-age security system funded by the state, collectives and families.

Many elderly, not satisfied merely with food and clothing, seek to live more colorful lives. Thirsty for knowledge, hale and hearty elderly people can be seen everywhere in rural and urban areas learning new subjects, surfing the Internet, practicing calligraphy and participating in fashion shows and exercise activities. Their active attitude toward life inspires the young people around them, and they are in fact the cornerstone of a stable and harmonious society.
