Every autumn, hundreds of thousands of photography fans and tourists from home and abroad flock to a Euphrates poplar reserve in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to enjoy the amazing views.

The Euphrates poplar tree (populus euphratica), which grows in clumps along riverbanks, is important for botanical research because it is able to survive under extreme weather and environmental conditions. Botanists study it to help other woody plants survive under heat stress.

Located in E'jina Banner of Alsan League, the nature reserve of populus euphratica forest was approved by the regional government in 1992. In 2001, it was approved as a national nature reserve, which consists of three areas, namely the core area, experiment area, and buffer area.

The 8,774-hectare core area, accounting for 33.4 percent of the whole reserve, is the best-protected area in terms of ecological system. It also functions as the gene pool. The experiment area covers an area of 7,461 hectares, and functions as the experiment base for introduction and cultivation of plant species as well as animal domestication and breeding.
