Inside the acoustic, soundproof walls, the technology in most KTV establishments is usually state-of-the-art, and the group that I am with takes full advantage by making vocal echo reverberation sounds because now we are bolder. Three group members, each brandishing an individual microphone, stage a Tom Jones imitation. Miraculously two tambourines and a small drum have appeared, courtesy of the house, and our room rocks. Singers are encouraged to virtually “swallow-the-mike” as all equipment comes with some form of sterilized covers for each new party group.
Songsters may engage in competitions, private auditions, or playfully exercise their lungs up to six hours or more, as long as they pay for facility use. Rental prices range from 38 yuan per afternoon for a small three-person room, to 238 yuan per hour at night for a room holding 50 or more people. Time arrangements can be from noon to six, six to eleven, or eleven to six in the morning. Typically, song title selections, popular artists and lyrics available in several languages help dictate not only the length of the stay, but also the likelihood of returning. Food and beverage options are another big factor making KTV a frequent social event or regular after-dinner family outing. Golden Years KTV, Party World KTV, Party KTV and Joy Melody KTV are some of the big names in karaoke, which had its origins in Japan during the 1970s. It seems that karaoke, adult entertainment once thought to be merely a fad, is here to stay.
Finally, when the door is opened by the uniformed attendant bringing our bill, we can hear outside of our song room, throbbing music from other quarters nearby indicating that other parties are still going full-tilt despite our preparations for departure. For some this may be a proving ground, or pre-career singing audition testing site. To others, playing KTV may simply be a time to bond and enjoy the moment. I know that soon I will be back for more; as for me this has only been the beginning. |
