Kaleidoscopic Gala

(FAN JUN)

May 1, the 2010 World Expo opened in Shanghai.

In 184 days, the Expo attracted 246 participating countries, international organizations and 73 million visitors. Both figures created records in Expo history.

In an area of 5.28 square km, the Expo site became a global village where people could not only see rare treasures from around the world, but also get a taste of the diversity of the world's cultures through more than 20,000 performances.

The Expo came to an end with a spectacular closing ceremony on the evening of October 31.

Charting a New Course

(FAN RUJUN)

October 15-18, the Fifth Session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) examined and approved the Proposal on Formulating the 12th Five-Year Program (2011-15) for National Economic and Social Development.

The proposal provides the basis for drafting the 12th Five-Year Program. It includes accelerating transformation of economic development pattern, further expanding domestic demand and pushing forward the modernization of agriculture.

The proposal also stresses the development of a modern industrial system, coordinated development of all regions, and the construction of an energy-efficient and environment-friendly society in the coming five years.

The 12th Five-Year Program for National Economic and Social Development will be formulated at the annual session of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, in March 2011.

The session also appointed Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, 57, as vice chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission.

New Lunar Mission

(LI GANG)

October 1, China's second unmanned lunar probe, Chang'e-2, blasted off on a Long March-3C carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Chang'e-2 is China's first unmanned spacecraft to be boosted from the launch site directly to the Earth-Moon transfer orbit, greatly reducing the journey time from that of Chang'e-1's, China's first lunar orbiter. Chang'e-2 traveled for about 112 hours before entering the lunar orbit, compared with 13 days for Chang'e-1.

To acquire more detailed Moon data, Chang'e-2 entered a lower lunar orbit about 100 km above the surface, compared with the 200-km altitude of Chang'e-1. The satellite also took photos of the Moon's Bay of Rainbows area, the proposed landing ground for Chang'e-3 lunar probe.

China successfully completed all its 15 space launches in 2010, including five Beidou satellites for its independent satellite navigation and positioning network.

Head Count

(YU ZHONGHUA)

November 1, China started its sixth national census, with about 6.5 million census takers visiting more than 400 million households to get an accurate count of the population during a month.

For the first time, foreigners living on the mainland were included in the census, although their questionnaire was much shorter compared to that of Chinese citizens.

The results of China's once-in-a-decade census will be announced at the end of April 2011.

Accomplished Goals

(XU YU)

November 30, the National Development and Reform Commission said China hit its emissions reduction goal for the 2006-10 development period a month ahead of schedule and would meet its overall energy conservation target on time.
