Hu Jintao

- General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee

Hu Jintao, of the Han ethnic group and a native of Jixi, Anhui Province, was born in December 1942. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in April 1964 and began working in July 1965. He graduated from the Hydraulic Engineering Department of Tsinghua Universitywhere he majored in the study of hub hydropower stations. With a university education, he holds the title of engineer.

He is now general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission, vice president of the People's Republic of China (PRC), vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the PRC and president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.

1959-64 Student at the Hydraulic Engineering Department of Tsinghua University

1964-65 Student and political instructor at the Hydraulic Engineering Department of Tsinghua University

1965-68 Participated in R&D at the Hydraulic Engineering Department of Tsinghua University and served as a political instructor until the start of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76)

1968-69 Worked with the housing construction team of the Liujia Gorge Engineering Bureau under the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power

1969-74 Technician and secretary with the No.813 Sub-Bureau of the No.4 Engineering Bureau under the Ministry of Water Resources and Electric Power and deputy secretary of the General Party Branch of the sub-bureau's Head Office

1974-75 Secretary with the Gansu Provincial Construction Committee (GPCC)

1975-80 Deputy chief of the design management division of the GPCC

1980-82 Deputy director of the GPCC and secretary of the Gansu Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYLC)(September-December 1982)

1982-84 Member of the Secretariat of the CYLC Central Committee and chairman of the All-China Youth Federation

1984-85 First secretary of the Secretariat of the CYLC Central Committee

1985-88 Secretary of the CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee

1988-92 Secretary of the CPC Committee of the Tibet Autonomous Region

1992-93 Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretarial of the CPC Central Committee

1993-98 Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, and president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee

1998-99 Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, vice president of the PRC, and presidentof the Party School of the CPC Central Committee

1999-2002 Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission, vice president of the PRC, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the PRC, and president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee

2002- General secretary of the CPC Central Committee, vice chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission, vice president of the PRC, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the PRC, and president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee

He was alternate member and member of the 12th CPC Central Committee and member of the 13th, 14th and 15th CPC Central Committees, and is member of the 16th CPC Central Committee. He was member and Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the 14th and 15th CPC Central Committees, and is member and Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau and general secretary of the 16th CPC Central Committee. He was made an additional vice chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission at the Fourth Plenary Session of the 15th CPC Central Committee. He was member of the Standing Committee of the SixthNational Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
