2013 East Asian Games: China´s off to Golden Beginning

Tianjin is playing host to the East Asian Games. Monday brought the first day of competition of the Games where the Chinese team got off to a great start.

The host nation, winning a remarkable 22 gold medals on day one, sit well ahead of second placed Japan on seven on the medal table. China's first gold medals were claimed by the shooting team as they dominated the men's 10m air rifle events.

The trio of Yang Haoran, Wang Tao and Liu Zhiguo team up to win the 10m team gold. And later in the individual finals, Wang won a second gold beating with his compatriot Yang by just 2.2 points. Liu took the bronze medal as the Chinese team swept the individual podium as well.

In track and field, China's Wan Yong won the gold in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 69.26 meters, South Korean Lee Ywun chul grabbed the silver while China's Qi Dakai took the bronze. China won gold in 6 events in track and field as the nation was the big winner on the first day in the athletics.

South Korea's first gold came in the men's long jump event, Kim Sang Su leapt 7.71 meters to take the title, with Yun Zhiming of China earning the silver. Yuhi Oiwa of Japan took the bronze.

In the women's 5,000 meters, Japanese runner Riko Matsuzaki took the gold in a time of 16 minutes, 9.72 seconds, to give her nation its first gold of the games. Matsuzaki's win, one of three golds on the first day of track and field competition for Japan. Kim Chun Mi from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) took the 5,000m silver, and Chinese runner Fu Tinglian completed the podium.

China has sent a young Chinese diving team to the games. Yu Longji claimed the men's 3m springboard with teammate Cai Chengcheng winning the bronze. Yu Ikamoto from Japan took the silver medal.

In the women's 1 meter springboard, 19-year-old Tian Hong pulled off a perfect fifth and final dive, beating her 21-year-old teammate Zheng Shuangxue to make it a China 1-2. Chan Shanrong from China's Hong Kong took the bronze.

China's Xing Yiying dominated the women's 10m platform, while Kim Un Hyang of the DPRK came second with Chinese Ke Tingting finishing third.

And the host nation would be golden again as Gao Ang and Hu Qiyuan topped the men's 10m platform synchro, beating South Korean and DPRK pairs.

And in table tennis, powerhouse China remains on track for another title sweep in both the men's and women's events. The men's team beat Chinese Taipei in straight sets to secure a place in the semi-finals. And the women's team knocked off Hong Kong in the second round, and are also through to the last four thanks to a 3-nothing victory.
