Geographic Location: Located at 32.31-42.57 north latitude and 92.13-108.46 east longitude. The ancient Silk Road runs through the whole province.

Size: About 1,520 km long from east to west, 1,655 km in its widest place and only 25 km in the narrowest place.

Total Population: 26.0334 million.

Ethnic Groups: There are a total of 55 ethnic groups in the province. Minority population take up 2.199 million, accounting for 8.4 percent of the whole population. Hui nationality is the largest in all the minority nationalities with a population of 1.185 million.

Administrative Divisions: 12 prefecture level cities, 2 autonomous prefectures, 4 county level cities, 59 counties, 7 ethnic minority autonomous counties and 17 districts under city jurisdiction.
