The multilingual versions of the second volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China were launched in London on April 11 (CIPG)

The multilingual versions of the second volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China were launched in London on April 11, at a ceremony attended by over 300 political and business leaders, academics and representatives of publishing agencies from 14 countries and regions.

Chinese wisdom

The second volume unveiled during the London Book Fair, contains a collection of 99 articles, including Xi's speeches, conversations, instructions and congratulatory messages between August 2014 and September 2017.

The book was published in Traditional Chinese, English, French, Spanish, German, Russian, Japanese, Arabic and Portuguese, and serves as a supplement to the first volume launched in September 2014 and published by Foreign Languages Press, a publishing house under the China International Publishing Group (CIPG). The first volume contains articles arranged in 18 topics, incorporating 79 speeches, talks, interviews, notes and letters from the Chinese leader between November 2012 and June 2014.

The first volume has been translated into 24 languages in 27 versions, and more than 6.6 million books have been published worldwide, helping the international community better understand contemporary China and the Communist Party of China (CPC). The first and the second volumes are an organic and unified whole.

Over the three years since the publishing of the first volume, Xi, who is also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, has continued to put forward a series of new concepts, thoughts and strategies that have enriched the CPC's theoretical base.

Rich content

The second volume is characterized by the practices of the CPC Central Committee, with Xi at the core, to unite and lead the Chinese people in upholding and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in a new era, according to a statement released by CIPG.

It reflects the development and main contents of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It is also expected to help the international community better understand the path, concept and model of China's development, the statement continued.

Besides the carefully-chosen texts, the second volume also includes 29 photos selected to capture various facets of Xi's official functions. They are grouped into two clusters, one on domestic affairs and the other on international diplomatic activities.

One photo shows Xi with villagers of the Liangjiahe village, reviewing poverty alleviation efforts on February 13, 2015. Other photos feature him in multilateral meetings hosted by China, including the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Beijing in November 2014, the 11th G20 Summit in Hangzhou in September 2016 and the Ninth BRICS Summit in Xiamen in September 2017. These photos demonstrate China's increasingly key role on the international stage.

Well received

The UK's Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, attended the book ceremony and said the global launch of President Xi's work in London was a "milestone." He expressed his hope that the book would enlighten readers about where China is going and what it is thinking.

"It takes a lifetime to understand China. And I am on that journey," he said, adding that he awaits future volumes of the book.

Jiang Jianguo, Minister of the State Council Information Office, said at the ceremony that he believes that through the book, international readers will better understand that the CPC is a party that seeks to improve the well-being of the Chinese people, to realize the rejuvenation of the nation and to promote common development for the whole world.

Jiang said that China will push for quality development, vigorous innovation, deeper reform and opening up in a bid to further share opportunities and benefits with the rest of the world.

Liu Xiaoming, China's Ambassador to the UK, said that cultural exchanges between the two countries have made important contributions to the development of bilateral relations.

The premiere of the book is a major event for China-UK ties, and it is hoped that the two sides will take this opportunity to further strengthen cultural exchanges and mutual learning so as to build bilateral relations into a model of major-country relations featuring mutual respect, equality, mutual trust and win-win cooperation.

Martin Albrow, a renowned British sociologist, said the book is a reinforcement of the first volume. "The new book is not only for Chinese readers, but for all those who care about the future of mankind," he said.

Former Italian Prime Minister, Mario Monti, said the book showcases the Chinese leader's global vision and his insights into the governance of China, which will prove inspiring for readers across the world. He also said that the book helps dispel some of the misunderstandings and prejudices about a rising China.

Felipe Gonzalez, former Spanish Prime Minister, said the book helps global readers understand China's vital role in pushing for globalization and building a community with a shared future for mankind.

The book also offers a perspective on how to tackle relations among European nations, how to participate in and push forward globalization and how to build a cooperative relationship with China, Gonzalez added.

On the same day that the multilingual versions of the second volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China were launched, a group of foreign guests, including state officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations, think tank members and journalists, was invited to China to visit Liangjiahe Village in Yanchuan County, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, where President Xi lived and worked for seven years.

Madhav Kumar Nepal, former Nepalese Prime Minister, was a member of the foreign guests. After the tour, he told the People's Daily that he believes China is playing an increasingly unique role in international and regional affairs, saying that as China and Nepal engage in more exchanges, it is imperative that all the people of Nepal get to know China better.

Nepal also said that the book Xi Jinping: The Governance of China is a crucial source for understanding China. "Xi's book on governance, full of words of wisdom, enjoys popularity among the Nepalese people," he said. "China's development experiences in various fields can be a lesson for many countries around the world."

According to CIPG data, the Simplified Chinese edition of the second volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, which was published in November 2017, exceeded 10 million copies in global circulation in early January. The multilingual versions just published are expected to reach an even wider international audience.
