Hello and welcome to the 34th issues of Beijing Review. Photo by Wang Yajuan COVER STORY The Widening Wallet is about cross-border e-commerce in China. From only being able to purchase overseas products by traveling abroad to today's home-grown online shopping platforms, China's cross-border e-commerce is growing rapidly. New rules and procedures are becoming standardized and strict, lending order to the industry. WORLD Trump's Misguided Hesitation is a story about U.S. President Donald Trump's missteps following the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia. His combative and nationalistic rhetoric has emboldened white nationalist and white supremacy movements in America. It took a counter-protester's violent death and a huge public backlash to convince Trump to denounce the neo-Nazis and white nationalists. But the next steps are up to the American people to recognize the turning point on race relations and combatting the "Lost Cause" myth that denies slavery as the cause of the American Civil War. EXPAT'S EYE Finding Faith in Beijing is about kindness in Beijing. The author, an Indian journalist on a media fellowship in China, accidentally left a wallet on the seat of a shared e-bike. The writer quickly returned but found the e-bike and wallet, along with I.D. cards, money, apartment key card and bank card, gone. The situation was explained to a helpful police officer who filed the report and handed over a stamped and signed document to help with replacing lost documents. But the next day, a kind stranger dropped off the wallet, with everything intact, at the author's apartment building. A random act of kindness from a stranger in a big city restored faith in humankind. Copyedited by Pamela Tobey Comments to linan@bjreview.com |
