COVER STORY

Desert Warriors is about the transformation of a Qing Dynasty forested hunting ground from a wasteland into the world’s largest artificial forest. The Saihanba Jixie Forest Farm has increased the green coverage ratio from just over 11 percent to 80 percent today. It has also reduced the number of sandstorms in Beijing from an average of 56 days each year to 7.5.

WORLD

Fourth Time Lucky focuses on the relationship between China and Germany and how it could be affected the upcoming federal elections in Germany. Will Chancellor Angela Merkel continue to hold the confidence of voters and win a fourth term as Germany has inherited the mantel of Western leadership in the wake of Trump’s “America First” isolationism?

CULTURE

The Last Witnesses is about a new documentary on World War II sex slaves released in August. Twenty two, named for the number of survivors of Japan’s brutal sex slavery at that time, compassionately illustrates their lives after the war, allowing them to reminisce. It shows that despite the hardships and stigmatism, the women managed to retain their compassion and optimism into their old age.
