Hello and welcome to the 37th issue of Beijing Review.

COVER STORY

Tangible Results looks at accomplishments coming out of the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit. Founded as a platform for China and African nations to work on areas of mutual interest and cooperation, the summit illustrated a more hands-off approach to development efforts by China and included a $60 billion pledge of financial support for African development.

BUSINESS

Missing the Boat analyzes the probable consequences of the U.S. trade war on China and the harm it will cause to U.S. companies who engage with China, affecting entire U.S. business ecosystems. It could also cause a realignment of global trade and supporting institutions that would not benefit the U.S. and harm the country’s brand.

FORUM

What Kind of First Class of the New Term Do Students Need? discusses the recent program which aired on China Central Television. Required viewing for all primary and middle school students each year, this year’s program led off with 13 minutes of advertising, some of it for after-school classes that the Ministry of Education is trying to curb. Many people were dissatisfied with ads in a program intended to benefit students.
