(Cover Photo: WEI YAO) COVER STORY Passing on the Green Baton looks at how three generations of farmers from six families in northwest China have turned desert into forest. Known as the Six Old Men, six villagers originally teamed up to green 5,000 hectares near their village and succeeding generations are participating. In their fight against desertification, the eco warriors are now creating jobs for the impoverished in the area. WORLD A Sunset Glow looks at the G7’s growing disorder and the ascension around the world of developing countries and emerging economies. It suggests that the group consider joining developing countries to respond to global challenges. CULTURE Heroism Without Borders looks at the story of Hua Mulan, the Chinese heroine who has been the subject of ballads, plays and animated films. The first ballet about Mulan was staged in New York in August by the Liaoning Ballet. It combines Chinese national characteristics with contemporary aesthetics to present Hua and spread her heroic spirit. Copyedited by Pamela Tobey Comments to linan@bjreview.com |
