Wang Dongjin
Wang Dongjin, a cardiologist from the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, was awarded the title of Most Outstanding Doctor along with nine other medical workers on August 19, Chinese Medical Workers' Day.
Wang has performed over 10,000 heart surgeries, with a success rate of over 99 percent. He adopts the method of minimally invasive heart surgery, which enables doctors to conduct the operation through several small incisions instead of the traditional long cut of open-heart surgery.
Wang worked at the Beijing Fuwai Hospital, a leading cardiac hospital in China, before moving on to the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital in 2001. When he arrived, the hospital was not equipped to conduct heart surgery on patients over 65. Now, through his efforts, of the over 2,000 heart surgeries performed there every year, 31 percent are on people over 65.
