Liao Weihua
Private Liao Weihua won the gold medal in the flying contest of the aeronautical pentathlon at the seventh CISM Military World Games on October 19 in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province.
In the flying contest, officially known as low-level triangular navigation, participants compete as navigators and give orders to partner pilots to fly about 40 minutes on a triangular route. They are scored from three checkpoints to test their navigational accuracy and whether they reach the points on time. The competition also includes shooting, fencing, swimming, basketball, an obstacle run and orienteering.
Liao had been training for the competition since the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Bayi team of aeronautical pentathlon was set up in 2015. This year was the team's first time in the military games.
The 27-year-old Liao comes from a village in Shaoguan City of south China's Guangdong Province and was admitted to the National University of Defense Technology in 2011. He now serves in the PLA Air Force.
